Rooftop strangler sentenced to death

A man has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by a Shanghai court for murdering a woman over a financial dispute, the Shanghai Law Journal reported yesterday.

Li Nianhai, a migrant upfitter from central China’s Henan Province, admitted in court that he strangled the victim, Shu Xiaofang, on August 7 last year after they had a fight over 150,000 yuan (US$22,500) he had given her for purchasing an apartment, the newspaper reported.

He also said he had hidden Shu’s body under a water tank on top of the building on Shapu Road in Baoshan where the murder took place. Her badly decayed body was found more than two months later.

Li told the court he got to know Shu in August 2014 and that they had a sexual affair.

He said Shu had told him someone she knew wanted to sell an apartment and asked whether he would like to buy it, so Li paid her 150,000 yuan in the middle of June last year, according to the newspaper.

He said Shu had asked him for a second sum of money and called him on August 7 to meet on the 10th floor of a building around 5pm.

Li said a fight broke out when he asked Shu about the first 150,000 yuan. He then choked her but she managed to escape, according to the newspaper.

Li grabbed her again, this time taking out a piece of nylon rope and strangling her, the paper quoted Li as saying.
