School uniform gets costlier

EDUCATION officials explained yesterday that raising the price of school uniforms will ensure quality control.

In February, a scandal broke out during which it was found that low costs of uniforms were the main reasons why producers used inferior materials.

But parents said yesterday they were still unable to check the quality.

For the coming semester, the price of uniforms for primary, middle school and high school students could cost up to 300 yuan (US$49) per suit, according to the latest circular issued by the Shanghai Education Commission.

Prior to that, the highest price for a suit cost no more than 150 yuan at primary school and middle schools and 250 yuan at high schools.

Many parents worried that the clothing company or the school might take advantage and overcharge them. They are willing to pay more to ensure that their children are safe after quality watchdogs found uniforms made by a local firm contained aromatic amine dyes, a cancer-causing substance.
