Search for family of kids left at station

POLICE are searching for relatives of two young children left by their mother at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station earlier this week.

Police said they have been unable to contact the 28-year-old mother Zhu Xiaoying, a native of northwest China’s Gansu Province.

The 42-year-old father, surnamed Hua, from southwest China’s Guizhou Province has also been out of contact.

“We got in contact with police in Zhu’s hometown and they’re locating other relatives,” said Luo Pengfei, a police officer based at the railway station.

Police said 7-year-old Hua Fengdong, and his 3-year-old sister Hua Jingjing are currently at the Center for Temporary Care of Homeless Children.

The children underwent tests at Minhang Central Hospital.

The brother and sister were found sleeping on a bench in the station around noon on Monday, with a schoolbag their only possession.

Police were alerted after the children were seen to be alone.

Fengdong told police that their mother, with tears in her eyes, had told them she was going to buy lunch but did not return.

A note found in the schoolbag said: “I have no other choice, please help me and bring up these two innocent children.”

Fengdong said he hasn’t seen his father for some years.
