Security staff pay rise to aid morale
BELEAGUERED security check staff at city Metro stations are to get a pay rise, officials said yesterday.
This came as it was announced that security checks may be extended from large bags to include every bag and liquid carried by passengers, as part of enhanced security.
However, some Shanghai commuters are used to ignoring or being abusive toward inspectors asking them to put their bags through the scanners.
Staff turnover is high, with 1,400 of the 5,600 Metro security check staff who work at 621 points on the network quitting last year.
To improve morale and efficiency, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said that it is increasing the salaries of security check staff, who currently receive around 2,000 yuan (US$320) a month.
No details of the pay increase were given.
Staff will also receive intensive training in recognizing banned items and be warned for negligence, Yu Lie, deputy director with Shanghai Public Security Bureau, told city lawmakers.
Four warnings will result in a dismissal.
Yu said extending security checks was required.
“The checks are essential as some 1,900 forbidden items have been detected in the first half of this year through existing checks,” Yu told local lawmakers.
The Metro carries 8 million passengers daily and some 1.1 million bags are checked every day, according to Yu.
X-ray machines will also be upgraded to reduce the current 3-second checking time, he added.
Passengers who refuse to comply with security checks face detention, said Song Youguo, deputy director of Shanghai Metro police.
Banned items include gasoline, alcohol, certain knives and firecrackers.
