Self-styled ‘idealist’ bank robber gets 1 year

A 28-YEAR-OLD self-styled “idealist” who said he attempted to rob a Citi Bank branch using a bomb threat to support the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, was sentenced to one year in prison, Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court said yesterday.

The bank robber, surnamed Pang, was found by medical experts to have no mental illness, though his lawyer insisted that Peng was not well adjusted mentally, prosecutors told Shanghai Daily.

Prosecutors said Pang arrived in the city and made an unsuccessful search for a job after graduating from university in another province. With bricks in his backpack and a remote control in his hand, he entered a Citi Bank branch in Lujiazui in the Pudong New Area on January 16 and told a bank vice president to give him 1 million yuan (US$164,000) or he would detonate his “bombs.”

Hundreds of office workers in the building were evacuated. Pang was caught at the scene after police reached the bank.
