Seniors to get free anti-pneumonia shots

Shanghai is offering free pneumonia vaccinations for residents who are 60 years of age or older in a public health program that was kicked off over the weekend.

About 3 million people are expected to benefit from the program that is aimed to reduce the incidence of streptococcus pneumonia among the elderly, the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said.

It said pneumonia shots were the best way to prevent diseases caused by streptococcus. The shots can reduce the chances of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lower respiratory infection, the need for antibiotics and hospitalization.

Studies have found that people who have had the shots fared better against respiratory problems, acute kidney failure and cardiac arrests.

The vaccination is available at 251 neighborhood health centers and district-level hospitals. The clinics for the shots are open for two days in a week.
