Shanghai gives holiday subsidies to the needy
Shanghai government will give New Year subsidies for the first time to local needy and pensioners to let them enjoy the holiday season, the civil affairs officials said today.
The subsidies will cover about 5 million people, including about 1 million needy people and 4 million retirees. Poor college students and children of migrant workers are among the beneficiaries, said the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
The subsidies are given to offset consumer price inflation. Some people will receive the subsidies in cash; others will get food coupons for buying inexpensive food products at designated stores.
In addition, the city's charity organizations will also do something for the needy ahead of the Chinese New Year. The Shanghai Charity Foundation will launch a citywide donation drive next month and more than 10,000 people are expected to distribute collected items to the disadvantaged people.
