Shanghai government launches official microblog
SHANGHAI Municipal Government Information Office opened its official microblog account this morning to offer an interactive communication channel between the government and the public via several social networking websites.
The microblog, Shanghaicity, offers real-time updates on government issues, city life and multimedia city guide as well as quick responses to social concerns. Online discussions, events and surveys will be held regularly.
The microblog appears simultaneously on several microblogging websites such as weibo.com, t.qq.com, eastday.com and xinmin.cn.
Also this morning, several other municipal departments launched their official microblogs, including the Shanghai Public Security Bureau, Shanghai Commercial and Industrial Administration and some district governments.
As government microblogs grow in influence, more official units are expected to make their presence on social networking platforms by the end of next March, according to the Municipal Information Office.
To date, nearly 600 Shanghai government offices and institutions have started their official microblogs and about 300 city officials use their real names to publish tweets, covering issues from public security, transport, tourism to environmental protection, civil affairs, education and volunteer groups.
Among them, Shmetro, the microblog of Shanghai Metro operator, Shentong Group, on Weibo.com has more than 1 million followers.
Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Orchestra, Shanghai Cultural Square and many other cultural institutions also have their official microblogs.
Shanghaicity will gradually incorporate all government-operated microblogs to provide better communication with the public.
Shanghaicity is currently only in Chinese language and is available at:
