City hands out top science awards

Two local scientists received Shanghai’s top science award today.

Jin Donghan, a power machinery engineer, and He Jifeng, a computer scientist, each won the top prize of 500,000 yuan (US$80,645) for their achievements in improving China’s technological prowess and boosting the country’s scientific status around the world.

A total of 298 projects and people won Shanghai Science and Technology Awards this year, the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission said. The awards are given out every two years.

Jin, 53, president of Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute, led a team that developed China’s first thermal engine, which has wide military uses. The engine also has civilian uses.

He, 70, director of East China Normal University’s Software Engineering Institute, created highly reliable software that is used in the auto and aeronautics industries. A 40-year veteran in his field, He’s achievements have led to vast safety improvements in the aforementioned industries.

German national Zhang Yi won the international science and technology cooperation award.
