Shanghai high-rise fire leads to evacuation of 10, one injury, after explosion
AN apartment in a high-rise residential building on Caobao Road in Shanghai’s Minhang District exploded and caught fire at about 10pm yesterday. Firefighters rushed to the scene and evacuated more than 10 residents, including four elderly people and three South Koreans.
The apartment owner, a 58-year-old man, was severely injured and still in a life-threatening condition.
The fire was caused by the detonation of liquefied gas.
According to a witness surnamed Hai, the explosion came from an apartment on the 10th floor in building No. 2 of the Grand Shanghai International Garden. The fire started on the 10th floor and the flames soon spread to the 11th and 12th floors. The fire was brought under control after half an hour.
The firefighters checked every room to avoid flare-ups until 2am today. The owner of the apartment where the fire started still hadn’t turned up this morning, firefighters said. The external walls of 10th, 11th and 12th floors had turned black from the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
