Shanghai land official gets life in bribery trial

A former official in charge of Shanghai's land-use approvals was sentenced to life imprisonment today for taking 10.45 million yuan (US$1.62 million) in bribes.

The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court also ordered the confiscation of all the personal assets and illegal income of Tao Xiaoxing, 60, former deputy director of the Shanghai Housing, Land and Resources Bureau.

Tao took advantage of his position to help real estate developers get land-use approvals and obtain land at prices much lower than market prices. In return, he took bribes from seven developers between September 1998 and August 2010.
