Shanghai plane slips off taxiway at Urumqi

A Shanghai Airlines flight division manager was demoted yesterday after a passenger aircraft slid off an icy taxiway in northwest China.

Pictures posted online showed the nose wheel of the aircraft buried in snow covering the grass area beside the taxiway.

Flight FM9220, due to fly from Urumqi to Shanghai’s Hongqiao airport, skidded off the taxiway at 9:33am, the Xinjiang Regional Administration under the Civil Aviation Administration of China said in a statement.

It said the incident at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport was caused by ice on the taxiway when the Boeing 737 aircraft was making a turn.

Around 40 minutes later, an A320 passenger plane operated by China Southern Airlines also skidded off the taxiway, forcing the crew to abort takeoff, the regional administration said.

Neither incident caused injury to anyone on board or damage to the aircraft, it added.

In a statement, Shanghai Airlines said the “improper operation of the crew” was to blame for the incident.

At a high-level meeting yesterday afternoon it removed its flight division manager from his post. The company’s deputy general manager in charge of safety was also ordered to “make a deep self-examination,” according to the airline.

“The airline has made proper arrangement to the passengers onboard and would like to deeply apologize for the inconvenience,” its statement said.

The flight was rescheduled to take off at 9pm yesterday, a delay of almost 12 hours.

China Southern’s Flight CZ3436 to Guiyang in southwest Guizhou Province took off around 5pm.

The Urumqi airport downgraded operations to ensure safety after the two incidents, the regional administration said.

More than 20 flights had been canceled and 33 delayed as of yesterday afternoon, according to the airport authority.

The temperature at the airport was about minus 2 degrees Celsius at the time of the two incidents and remained below zero degrees for the rest of the day.

The regional administration said its officials were at the site to investigate.
