Shanghai reveals a month of violence
CITY prosecutors have brought cases against 294 suspects involved in 172 gang-related and violent incidents this month, the Shanghai Prosecutors Office said yesterday.
There were 56 cases of gangs disturbing the social order, group fights and extortion, with 128 suspects involved, and 116 serious violence cases including murder, assault, robbery, rape and kidnapping, with 166 suspects involved.
Prosecutors revealed details of an incident on May 22, when a Shandong Province native surnamed Wang, after drinking wine, was driving a car with his two friends on Shangnan Road. When he was about to turn left, a Mercedes Benz was at the traffic lights ahead of him.
The three, thinking the vehicle was blocking their way, began hitting the car windows with wooden sticks. They hit the driver, surnamed Zheng, through her window and also attacked another passenger. After the attack there were fears that Zheng, who was pregnant, might lose her baby. The incident caused hundreds of onlookers to gather round, prosecutors said.
When Wang, who was slightly injured in the incident, went to hospital for treatment, he also attacked two doctors and police officers who came to investigate the case, prosecutors said.
The three have been charged with disturbing the social order by Pudong New Area prosecutors.
In the violence cases, assaults, robberies and murders were the top three crimes, accounting for 85 percent of the total, prosecutors said.
In one incident, two unemployed men surnamed Yang and Liu got into an unlicensed taxi on the night of December 23 last year and instructed the taxi to go to a remote area.
The two then robbed the driver of cash and a cell phone. When the driver tried to escape, he was stabbed.
The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate Prosecutors Office is prosecuting Yang and Liu for murder.
