Shopper wins payout

A SUPERMARKET has been ordered to pay a man 1,380 yuan (US$220) in compensation plus a full refund for falsely promoting a weight-loss product, Huangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Yan, paid 138 yuan for a box of “Slimmm” meal-replacement shakes from the unnamed store in December 2012. Its packaging claimed it was a low-calorie food. However, its nutrition information indicated it contained 1,583.6 kilojoules per 100 grams, which is more than nine times the permitted amount for a food to be allowed to make such a claim. Yan sued the supermarket for false labeling and misleading its customers. The court ruled in his favor and ordered the supermarket to pay compensation.
