Shoppers seek cash after theft accusation

A COUPLE accused of theft from Tesco asked for more than 100,000 yuan (US$14,641) in compensation for mental anguish in an appeal hearing yesterday, complaining they were hit by a security guard.

In a previous hearing, they were awarded 5,400 yuan in compensation by Fengxian District People's Court to pay medical costs.

But the court made no compensation for mental anguish, prompting their appeal against Tesco Supermarket's Fengxian outlet.

Yesterday the appeal court heard that Chen Qin and Chen Guohua were looking for cardboard boxes to pack their shopping when a security guard mistook Chen Guohua for a thief, hitting him hard on the chest and head.

The husband shouted for help and his wife rushed in, the court heard.

"I was very anxious because my husband had just recovered from a serious traffic accident. He wasn't able to take any more abuse," Chen Qin said.

She also tried to stop the security guard but was also hit on the eyes and head. As a result, she suffered a heart attack, the plaintiffs said.

The court did not announce its decision.
