Showers, cold front to cool temperatures over weekend

The brief showers that soaked parts of the city will be back again today with a cold front over the weekend likely to push temperatures further down, forecasters said yesterday.

Today’s high will be 32 degrees Celsius but over the weekend it is expected to drop below 28.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow high temperature alert at 10:15am yesterday when the mercury touched 36.1 degrees — probably the last hottest day in August.

An afternoon thunderstorm brought the temperature down to 27.9 degrees at 4:30pm but three other yellow alerts were issued for rainstorm, lightning and gale. Lujiazui recorded 54.4 millimeters of rain at 4:30pm, the heaviest in Shanghai.

Thundershowers are expected again today. Tomorrow’s high will be 27 degrees followed by brief rain spells and overcast to cloudy skies.

The cloudy weather will last until early September with the excepted highs below 30 degrees.

As of yesterday, Shanghai had experienced 47 high-temperature days since July, much more than the 22 to 27 hot days predicted by the bureau.

“It was because Shanghai had been under the control of subtropical high for a long period this summer, while cold fronts and tropical storms influenced the city less than before,” said Zhu Jiehua, a bureau official.

Yesterday’s air quality index touched 111 at 6pm, which indicated a lightly polluted air quality with the main pollutant being ozone.

Severe tropical storm Kong-Rey was downgraded to a tropical storm at 2pm yesterday. It struck Taiwan yesterday and dumped more than 500 millimeters of rain, resulting in widespread flooding.

After moving northward to coastal areas of Zhejiang Province, it will not make a landfall and instead edge to northeast.

The closest it could come to Shanghai was about 350 kilometers away from the city.
