Showers to keep the city cool

After the long hot spell that stretched well over a month, temperatures dropped to 20 and lower for the first time yesterday, bringing a welcome relief to the residents.

Temperature in Chongming Island dropped below 20 degrees Celsius yesterday morning — 19.1 degrees, while it hovered between 20 and 22 degrees in the rest of the city, the local weather bureau said.

September rains will keep the city cool with mercury fluctuating between 24 to 27 degrees during the next three days.

Under the combined influence of an east-moving upper-level trough and a low level wind share, rain showers are expected during the week.

“Skies in the next seven days are likely to be overcast with intermittent rains at times. The maximum high will be 29 degrees,” Wu Rui, a chief service officer at the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, said yesterday.
