Shows and cultural activities to help light up Lantern Festival
LANTERN shows and folk cultural activities will take the spotlight on Saturday to celebrate the Lantern Festival.
Such events will take place at city tourist attractions and ancient towns, tourism authorities said.
Yuyuan Garden in Huangpu District is expected to receive huge crowds on Saturday for its annual lantern show, which features a huge rooster to mark the new lunar year.
The rooster lantern, around 10 meters tall, is a spectacular sight with its colorful feathers.
Other glittering lantern sets at Yuyuan include a peace dove, a Great Wall, and lanterns shaped into some of China’s treasured animals such as a giant panda and white-flag dolphin.
There are also lanterns displaying China’s four great inventions — gunpowder, printing techniques, compass and paper — as well as the ancient Chinese engineer and inventor Lu Ban, and Huang Daopo, who is credited for China’s weaving skills.
The scenic spot will only allow people to buy tickets from 2pm on Saturday and from 4pm on Friday and Sunday to control visitor numbers and to ensure safety. In addition, there will be restrictions on using Yuyuan’s Zigzag Bridge if numbers exceed alert levels.
During the Spring Festival, the garden received an average 180,000 to 200,000 visitors daily.
Nanxiang Old Street in Jiading District has lantern sets featuring animal shapes and human figures and there will be a riddle guessing event as well as a nianhua (New Year’s painting) exhibition.
Visitors to Binjiang Forest Park in the Pudong New Area on Saturday will be able to taste free handmade tangyuan, or glutinous rice dumplings, which are a typical food for the festival, made by snack masters in Gaoqiao Town.
Gaoqiao people use cooked congee paste instead of water when they knead dough, and tangyuan made in such way is more glutinous and soft.
The town’s specialty foods, such as specially stuffed pancakes, are also available at the park.
Shanghai Happy Valley will host a lantern show featuring 10 big sets made by craftsmen in Zigong, Sichuan Province, renowned as the hometown of colorful lights and 300 lantern riddles.
Fireworks and dragon lion dances will be staged at Happy Valley as well.
Guyi Garden in Jiading is hosting a Lunar New Year flower exhibition, which includes narcissus, plum blossom, orchid, and gourd, traditional plants for the festival that carry auspicious meanings. A riddle guessing competition will also be held on the day and visitors to Guyi Garden will be invited to paint and make their own lanterns.
