A MAN has been punished with 15 days’ detention for discarding a cigarette butt that caused a fire in a warehouse at a textile market in Hongkou District on Tuesday, the Wenhui Daily reported yesterday. Investigators found from surveillance video that the offender, surnamed Gong, a shop owner in the market, had lit a cigarette at noon and entered the warehouse. Fire broke out 20 minutes after he left. He later admitted to police that he had thrown away the butt in the warehouse.
