Sore ear puts failed robber behind bars
A WOULD-BE robber who told police he was the crime victim in order to have his injured ear treated free was jailed for two years yesterday.
Xiao Jianfeng, a 25-year-old from Chongqing Municipality, was heading back to the construction site in Pujiang Town, Minhang District, where he worked after a night out with friends on November 4, 2009. He hailed a tricycle ridden by a man surnamed Chen and agreed a 10 yuan (US$1.46) fare.
But when the tricycle reached a remote area and no one was around, Xiao tried to strangle Chen with a shoelace and demanded he hand over his money. But Chen fought back, biting Xiao on the ear.
Xiao ran off and Chen called the police. The next day Xiao's wound was serious enough to make him go to hospital, but he was refused treatment as he had no money.
He then called the police saying he had been injured in a robbery but had no money to see the doctor. He asked the police to help.
But they had already received Chen's report and knew it was the robber's ear that had been bitten. They took Chen to the hospital and Xiao was identified.
Xiao told Minhang District People's Court he just wanted to teach Chen a lesson because he had been overcharged. And he said he had surrendered himself to police.
But the court rejected this account as Xiao had already confessed to police. And giving himself up was not his intention when he called police.
