Sport star claims he can't pay his ex-wife

FORMER local soccer star Fan Zhiyi has told a court he can't pay the 2 million yuan (US$292,500) plus interest owed to his wife in their divorce settlement.
On September 16 last year the court ordered him to pay the sum within 10 days or interest would be charged at four times the bank rate under the terms of the couple's divorce agreement.
Because of Fan's delay in paying, the amount had risen to 2.41 million yuan. Fan was summoned by Xuhui District People's Court to explain his nonpayment and judges revealed yesterday that he said he didn't have enough money.
Fan, 40, who used to be captain of China's national soccer team, had appealed against the high interest rate to the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.
The court rejected his appeal on January 15, saying Fan had signed the divorce agreement of his own free will.
