Store manager bets 1.2m yuan

A SUPERMARKET employee was yesterday sentenced to nine years' prison for embezzling 1.2 million yuan (US$175,439) from the store to gamble.

Tao Yi, 24, was hired as an accountant by a well-known supermarket after graduating from college in 2006 and was soon promoted to financial manager of a store.

However, Tao began to buy lottery tickets in 2007 after a friend told him the lottery was the easiest way to make a fortune. He won 10,000 yuan and decided to develop a "lottery career," the Jiading District People's Court heard.

Tao spent all his savings on lottery tickets and online baccarat, even spending the money he'd saved for his wedding. On average he would spend more than 1,000 yuan on each lottery draw but he never won big prizes.

Tao began to take money from the supermarket's turnover. He began to bet and lose more, at one point staking 5,000 yuan on each lottery.

Tao stole more cash to balance the books for earlier months and made false accounts. When the supermarket's parent company checked the books, they discovered Tao had embezzled 1.23 million yuan.
