Student faces trial, accused of biting cop after refusing ID check in Metro
A student is facing trial for biting a Metro police officer after refusing a routine check, Metro police said today.
The 18-year-old student, surnamed Liu, was at Xujiahui Station at 4:40pm on Sunday, when he was stopped by police for a routine identity check. Liu refused to cooperate when an officer surnamed Xiang required him to show his identity card or give his identity card number, police said. The standoff turned violent when Liu pushed Xiang and bit him on the chest, police said.
Liu will be tried for obstructing public service, according to police.
Police have been holding identity checks around the city's Metro system. Experienced officers will target suspicious people and require them to show identity cards or give their card number, which will be instantly checked on a pocketable PDA machine for confirmation.
Police say the routine security checks have been helpful in identifying criminal suspects.
