Student in dock for killing ex-girlfriend

A Shanghai Maritime University postgraduate student allegedly poured acid over his ex-girlfriend and stabbed her to death in a jealous rage because she was seeing another man, the local court heard yesterday.

The defendant, surnamed Xu, told the court the girl, surnamed Zhou, broke up with him in January without giving a reason. But he later found out she was in love with one of her classmates at the university, where all three were studying.

Xu said the relationship was a huge blow and came as he was under the pressure of hunting for a job ahead of his looming graduation. He told the court he could not sleep and sleeping pills prescribed by doctors did not help.

He said he asked Zhou to put her relationship with the other student, surnamed Hong, on hold while he was still at the university, but she refused.

Xu told the court he took a knife and a bottle of hydroflouric acid he had bought online to confront Zhou and Hong on the fourth floor of the campus library in April to threaten them to break up.

When Hong fled, he attacked Zhou.

Prosecutors said Xu chased Zhou, grabbed her, poured the acid on her head and stabbed her more than 10 times. She died later in hospital from multipke organ failure and hemorrhagic shock.

Xu said he ran to the fifth floor after that and intended to commit suicide by jumping, but was stopped by a guard. He was detained and formally arrested and charged on July 15.

The defence argues Xu had not planned to kill his ex-girlfriend.
