Student pays dearly for destroying computer game weapon

A high school student has agreed to pay 12,500 yuan (US$2,007) to a gamer who sued him for destroying his favorite virtual weapon for a popular online game, the Baoshan District People's Court said yesterday.

The student surnamed Ji reached a compensation agreement with the gamer to end their dispute that began last August when Ji logged into the gamer's account and tried to help a friend entrusted by the gamer to improve the attributes of the virtual weapon.

The court heard the gamer bought the virtual weapon at 28,000 yuan and spent 12,000 yuan more to improve its attributes. Ji's wrong operation caused the weapon to disappear.

Although Ji is only a student, the gamer insisted on filing a lawsuit against him. At first, Ji's parents refused to pay because they wouldn't believe a virtual weapon would cost so much money. Finally they agreed to pay for the plaintiff's loss through court mediation.
