Student’s Rolex swap timed out
A UNIVERSITY student has been caught after allegedly swapping his dorm mate’s Rolex Submariner, which cost 86,000 yuan (US$12,400), with a fake one.
Police received a report from a student at a university in Lingang area, in the Pudong New Area, on September 18 that his Rolex had been replaced with a fake one. He had placed it on his desk in the dorm.
Surveillance video did not show any intruders.
Police then found the box for a fake watch in the wardrobe of the dorm mate. The authentic watch was found in a shoe of the watch owner.
The dorm mate, surnamed Fan, allegedly has confessed. He said the shoe was a temporary hiding place and that he had intended to take the watch away if his dorm mate did not notice the switch.
Fan has been put on bail, police said.
If convicted of theft, Fan could be sentenced to at least three years in prison.
