Students are no fans of dormitory heat measures

Air conditioning - or rather the lack of it - in student dormitories in Songjiang University Town has become a hot topic as the city swelters in temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius.
To make students on campus over summer more comfortable, Donghua University has opened three classrooms with air-conditioning where they can sleep at night.
Donghua is one of the seven universities and colleges in Songjiang University Town - where student dormitories are only fitted with fans.
Air conditioners can’t be installed because the power cables are incompatible, say officials.
Chen Wanli, a spokesman for Shanghai International Studies University, told Shanghai Daily that many students have complained and demanded air conditioners should be fitted.
But the university cannot do this as the dormitories were invested in and built by a subsidiary of Shanghai Oriental Pearl (Group) Co Ltd, added Chen.
Chen said the power supply would need to be relaid to install air conditioners. “That would be a huge renovation project,” said the official.
Most universities and colleges have extended opening hours of libraries, cafeteria and classrooms with air conditioners to help students cool down.
At Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Minhang campus, watermelons were distributed.
This month, military training for university and high school students kicked off. Today, 2,000 high school students will go to Oriental Land in Qingpu District for a five-day training. This may take part in cooler times of day and be canceled if it’s too hot, said an official.
