Students travel to city to thank charity donors

TWENTY-SIX students from two poverty-stricken counties in central China's Henan Province yesterday met in Shanghai with locals who have been helping with their schooling and living costs.

The students, aged between 12 and 16 years old, are representatives of more than 800 children and 100 elderly people in Jiaxian and Yexian counties in Pingdingshan City who have received more than 500,000 yuan (US$78,462) in donations from 400 Shanghai residents since 2008.

They met 50 local donors and gave them gifts of Pingdingshan specialty foods. The group also went sightseeing in Shanghai.

Most of the donors learned about the students' situation through Shanghai resident Fan Jianping, who traveled to the region in 2008.

"My Shanghai grandma funded my family to rebuild our home, and now it never lets in rain," said a 12-year-old girl in the group.

"I hope that my Shanghai grandma can visit our home some day," she added.

The young people will stay in Shanghai for three days. Their trip includes visits to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Fudan University today.
