Substandard cosmetics, cake mix destroyed
MORE than 8 tons of cake mix products imported from the United States have been destroyed after being found to contain excessive amounts of aluminum, the nation’s top quality watchdog said yesterday.
The Betty Crocker-brand products, comprising more than 3.3 tons of spice and chocolate cake mixes, and 4.7 tons of original flavor mix, were imported by a Shanghai-based food company, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China said.
According to medical experts, the consumption of excessive amounts of aluminum damages brain and nerve cells, and can cause dementia and anemia.
In a separate incident, the watchdog said 2.4 kilograms of Chanel nail varnish remover were destroyed after being found to contain benzene, a carcinogenic chemical.
The goods were imported from Belgium by China Duty Free Group and destroyed by Zhejiang entry-exit inspection and quarantine authorities.
Meanwhile, 360 kilograms of soybean milk products from Taiwan-based Yon Ho were destroyed in Fujian Province for being incorrectly labeled.
The packaging failed to indicate that the products contained genetically modified ingredients, which are in themselves legal, said Gu Zhenhua, deputy director of the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.
The highlighted products were among 189 imported food and cosmetics items returned or destroyed across the country in March, officials said.
