Supermarket vendor 鈥榮tole food he sold鈥
A man running an independent food operation at a supermarket who is suspected of stealing products from other counters and then selling them as his own merchandise was arrested yesterday, local television news reported
The suspect, surnamed Lin, took cooked food items from other counters operated by the supermarket in the Taopu area and put them in a trash bin, which he took back to his own counter, according to prosecutors, who said he was caught by a surveillance camera.
He allegedly threw away the products’ original packages, cut the food into smaller pieces and wrapped them up with his own packaging.
When customers took the newly packaged products to the cashier, it was recorded by the scanner as Lin’s revenue.
“His registered stock was about only 10,000 yuan (US$1521.8) a month. However, his sales volume hit 100,000 yuan a month,” Liu Xiaochen, an officer with Putuo police, told the STV news.
“There were also some products that were not listed in his stock index.”
From January to May, the supermarket lost products worth 160,000 yuan, the station reported.
Lin was caught on May 13.
