Survey: 60% of youth are not from Shanghai

A report released yesterday found nearly 60 percent of young people in Shanghai were non-locals.

The report, compiled by the Shanghai youth affairs authorities, said the number of non-locals grew at a faster rate in 2013. They first surpassed local youth in 2010.

There were 9.08 million young people between 14 and 35 years of age in Shanghai, accounting for 38.15 percent of the city’s total population. About 58.87 percent, or 5.34 million, were non-locals, up 2.37 percentage points compared to that in 2010.

While the total youth population increased by 160,300, the ratio of youth population to the city’s total population was reduced by 0.6 percentage points from that in 2010, indicating that aging problem was hurting Shanghai.

More men than women

The report also found there were more men than women among the young people. The ratio of male to female widened from 106:100 in 2010 to 107:100 in 2013. The gender ratio gap was even bigger among non-locals at 110:100.

The gender situation was very different from that in Hong Kong and Macau where there are more women than men among the younger crowd.

Young men and women in Shanghai were also getting married at an older age. The report found that the average age for marriage was 27.26 for men and 26.16 years for women in 2013, compared to 27 and 25.9 years in 2010.

Young women were also delaying pregnancies from 28.25 years old to 28.5 years old, the survey found.

The report surveyed 4,090 young people with 56.2 percent working and 30.6 percent students.

The survey also found young people spent an average of 42.38 hours on work every week, up 4.28 hours from 2010, cutting their leisure time to 4.14 hours every day.

About 56.7 percent of the respondents earn less than 5,000 yuan (US$827) a month and only 18.8 percent have a monthly income of over 7,000 yuan.
