Suspect caught in statues’ vandalism
A SUSPECT is in custody in the vandalism of well-known bronze statues on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall, which were covered with red and white paint yesterday morning.
The suspect is under investigation and a lawyer said the person might be accused of damaging public property, the Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Police said the suspect has broken rules by vandalizing the statues. No further details of the suspect were released.
The statues feature a family of three walking along the famous, often-crowded pedestrian street in Huangpu District downtown.
According to patrols, the incident happened around 5am yesterday, with at least two buckets of red and white paint spilled over the statues and around the base.
Several sanitation workers spent seven hours cleaning off the paint.
