Man held over sexual assults on 6 women

A 26-YEAR-OLD man has been detained for sexually assaulting six women last year, Shanghai police said yesterday.
The alleged attacks took place between 8pm and 9pm in elevators and in the street in the town of Taopu, Putuo District.
The man, surnamed Ma, allegedly approached the women from behind and then rubbed their breasts. He allegedly did it for the “excitement”, and allegedly told police he is addicted to porn.
The first incident allegedly happened in an elevator in a high-rise apartment building in August.
Ma allegedly touched the woman’s lips and her private parts.
The woman allegedly fought back by biting his thumb, at which point Ma fled.
Police, however, were unable to identify the man from the footage taken from the surveillance camera inside the elevator.
Five similar cases were reported in the following four months, all involving women aged between 20 and 30.
A woman surnamed Chen claimed she was attacked in December.
“He must have been walking on his tiptoes,” Chen said, referring to her alleged attacker.
Though the victims were unable to give many details about the alleged attacker, police assumed it was the same man in each case.
Ma was apprehended at his home at the end of December. He became the prime suspect after a worker at the Taopu Xincun subway station recognized him, police said.
