System to weed out low-rent cheats

THE Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau will work with fiscal and labor authorities to build a mechanism to check the income status of those applying for low-rent apartments.

Officials launched the initiative to better screen individuals after discovering many of the 1,673 households who applied for low-rent accommodation since 2007 had lied about their financial situation.

Those who had lied were disqualified from low-rent accommodations.

Officials said the system would also be used for income checks on those applying for a low-income subsidy and the settlement of medical insurance claims in the future.
