TV series starring Liu Xiang's wife shelved over 鈥榲ulgar鈥 scene overloaded with sexual innuendo
A TV series starring Ge Tian, wife of Shanghai’s favorite sporting son Liu Xiang, has been pulled off the air pending an investigation into claims it was overloaded with sexual innuendo.
“Fight the Devils Together” tells the story of China’s resistance to invading Japanese forces in the 1930s. It opened on May 7, but was promptly shelved.
The controversy begins when Ge’s character visits her lover who has been imprisoned by the Japanese.
During an amorous embrace, the boyfriend discovers a stick grenade inside his lover’s silk trousers. It becomes clear the couple plan to use it in a suicidal act of resistance.
But before pulling out the explosive, the lovers exchange several lines of ambiguous sexual innuendo. In one, the man says he will erupt one more time with ecstasy.
“They (the show’s producers) are using sex and violence to entice the audience under the cover of national sentiments,” read an editorial by Xinhua news agency.
In response to complaints from viewers about the “vulgar” scene, China’s media watchdog said it will undertake a full investigation.
“There are problems in the scene,” Xinhua quoted an unnamed official from the watchdog.
The State Administration for Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television is reviewing the show and will handle the matter according to the law, the person said.
