TV shoot technician identified
THE special effects technician responsible for the October 22 explosions on the set of the drama "I Have a Date with Spring" has been confirmed as an employee of Shanghai Film Group Corp, officials said yesterday.
Due to old explosives and a miscalculation, the technician failed to control five explosions during shooting in Shanghai.
The five explosions, which were supposed to be set off in sequence, took place simultaneously and earlier than intended, severely burning Taiwanese pop star Selina Jen and mainland actor Yu Haoming
Jen suffered third-degree burns on up to 40 percent of her body, while Yu was seriously burned on his arms and back.
According to Shen Yi, a spokeswoman from Shanghai Film Group Corp, "I Have a Date with Spring" was not its production and that the technician had signed up to work on the show without the group's permission.
"Our group did not establish any collaborative relationship with the drama's production team," Shen said.
"The technician took the job on his own without our approval."
Shen also denied that the old explosives were borrowed from Shanghai Film Group.
She said the group's explosives equipment had been sealed for safekeeping in April, before the World Expo started.
EE-Media, which produced "I Have a Date with Spring," said its top priority was to help Jen and Yu fully recover and did not release any compensation details.
Both performers are now in stable condition, but they will require a series of skin grafts.
So far, there has been no indication that Jen's planned April wedding to Richard Chang has been affected. But it has been estimated that she will lose about 20 million yuan (US$2.9 million) in future earnings now that most of her advertising and performance contracts have to be postponed or canceled.
Jen's agency broker also denied the rumor according to Hong Kong media that she had acute renal failure.
