Taken off the menu
SOME of Shanghai's top hotels have taken shark fin off the menu in response to calls to protect the species and end animal cruelty.
The list includes Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts and Peninsula Shanghai. However, the cuisine, a popular delicacy in Asian countries, is still readily available in many other venues.
Animal welfare groups say more effort is needed to save a species on the brink of extinction with about 1.5 million sharks slaughtered every week for their fins.
