Tanker truck spills hydrochloric acid, halting traffic in Songjiang

A TANKER truck loaded with 30 tons of hydrochloric acid overturned yesterday evening on a highway in Songjiang District, causing a serious chemical spill and a major traffic jam and putting the truck driver in the hospital.
Firefighters deployed 13 fire engines and used 300 tons of water to dilute the acid, Wenhui Daily reported today.
The 6pm accident and spill backed traffic up for eight kilometers, and the traffic jam lasted until 9:30pm, the report said. The driver, who was trapped in the vehicle, was hospitalized.
The tanker truck was believed to have crashed into a Land Rover that had stopped suddenly after missing a highway exit, according to a firefighter at the scene.
Police were still investigating the cause of the accident.
