Taxi driver held on rape charge

A TAXI driver has been detained for allegedly raping a woman passenger who was too drunk to notice, Putuo District police said yesterday.

The alleged victim, surnamed Li, said she remembered hailing a taxi home after drinking with friends. The next thing she recalled was waking up in a strange hotel and arguing with the manager over who was going to pay for the room.

When police arrived to investigate, they found a slip of paper with the taxi driver’s cellphone number on it, along with a message saying that he wanted to see the woman again. Police identified the driver only as having the surname Wang.

Condoms were found in the room where Li had stayed.

Footage from a surveillance video showed a taxi driver carrying a drunken Li into the hotel about 4am and then leaving some time later. Police checked Li’s clothes and deduced Wang had sexually assaulted her.

Wang was apprehended on August 29. He later “confessed” to the crime, telling police he thought Li was pretty.
