Taxi driver questioned about scam
A SHANGHAI taxi driver is under investigation after being accused of cheating unsuspecting passengers by manipulating his meter.
The Shanghai Traffic Law Enforcement Team said yesterday that it is questioning a driver surnamed Shao after receiving several tip-offs from the public.
The man is alleged to have fitted a device to the meter, which made fares rise more quickly. Officials said he confessed to using the device to charge tourists about 50 percent more than the real fare.
Non-locals were the easiest to target as they were unaware of what the true fare should be, he said.
Shao, who has not been charged, allegedly targeted foreigners for more than a month at Pudong International Airport.
Traffic officials are currently staging a crackdown against unscrupulous taxi drivers in the city.
