Taxi violations rising sharply

TAXI violations jumped about 30 percent last year, with most cases about taxis operating illegally, authorities said yesterday.
Infringements included cherry-picking and overcharging.
More than 255 taxi drivers were given 15-day business suspensions and another 204 had their licenses revoked.
Illegal taxis accounted for more than 84 percent of the total violations. Authorities caught 10,196 illegal taxis in 2016, up by nearly 30 percent from 2015. About 40 percent of the illegal taxis were unlicensed private cars providing car-hailing services, and another 632 were fake taxis.
The city’s two railway stations and two airports will still be at forefront of clampdowns this year.
In 2016, officers recorded 1,596 taxi violations in the major transportation hubs, up by about 33.6 percent year on year.
The city’s rules on car-hailing services took effect from December 21 last year.
The requirements for drivers include only people with local hukou, or household registration, and only locally registered vehicles are qualified to apply for car-hailing operation licenses.
A total of 86 drivers were caught providing car-hailing services illegally from December 21 to last Wednesday.
