Tech website loses court battle
A local website that published a negative assessment of a self-balancing electric vehicle was ordered to apologise to the manufacturer and pay 7,000 yuan (US$1,083) in compensation for damaging its reputation, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
The manufacturer, Shanghai New Century Robot Co, submitted to the court a test report issued by the state quality supervision, inspection and quarantine bureau on the product that proved the vehicle can travel 27 kilometers after a recharging. According to the court, in July 2014, New Century found that the popular information technology website pcpop.com had published an article on self-balancing electric vehicles that mentioned one of its products.
The assessment said the product’s battery runs out after a 15-kilometer run and warned customers to be cautious if they are considering buying it.
The court ruled that the website’s assessment was unfair and damaged the company’s reputation.
