Teen gets bail after stealing 47,000 yuan from friend

AN underage girl was released on bail after she took more than 47,000 yuan (US$7,362) from her friend's bank card to buy luxury goods, Minhang District prosecutors said yesterday.

Xiao Lu, the young girl, was charged with credit card fraud after she had handed herself to the police in February and returned all the money to her friend Xiao Li, prosecutors said.

On July 31, 2010 the two girls went shopping together and Li put her purse in Lu's bag for convenience. But when Li arrived home, she found her purse was still in Lu's bag.

Li called Lu immediately and told her to keep the purse safe since there was a deposit of over 300,000 yuan in a bank card inside her purse.

On the next day, Li tried to get her purse back but when she went to Lu's workplace, Lu said the purse was not with her.

On August 3, when Lu was shopping on Changle Road, the young girl found she didn't have enough money to pay for the expensive clothes she wanted and suddenly came up with the idea of using Li's bank card.

Lu then found a nearby ATM and successfully used Li's birthday date as the password, drawing 3,000 yuan and buying three clothing items. After that, the girl drew cash from the bank card every day over the next four days, eventually taking a total of 47,000 yuan.

Lu told prosecutors she took the money because she thought Li would not notice if a small amount went missing from her large deposit.

Since Lu was under 18, prosecutors put her under the watch of a social worker and released her on bail.
