Termites invade city districts
SWARMS of termites were reported in some districts throughout the city last night, the Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Residents from Zhabei, Huangpu and Jing'an districts reported swarms of the insects appearing at about 7pm.
Security guards in the Jing'an Sculpture Park on Beijing Road West said elderly people out walking or dancing fled after being bitten. The termites disappeared from the park just before it closed at 9pm.
Termite control stations in Zhabei, Jing'an and Huangpu District received calls from 6pm to 9:30pm with many residents reporting the insects had invaded their homes.
Last night's hot muggy weather was ideal for the insects to reproduce. Every year from April to June, just before the rainy season in the Yangtze Delta region, large numbers of termites fly out from their nests and reproduce. The insects can cause serious structural damage to buildings, crops and plantations.
