The heat will go on, say city forecasters
Temperatures in Shanghai reached 35 degrees Celsius yesterday after a cooler couple of days, and a new round of hot weather is expected to arrive at the weekend, according to weather authorities.
One more day of temperatures exceeding the 35-degree benchmark and the number of hot temperature days this summer will equal the 45 in 1947, second only to 1934’s 55.
Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow alert for high temperatures at 12:52pm yesterday.
“Today’s high temperature, which was different from that in the past consecutive sizzling days, just lasted for a very short period,” Zhu Jiehua, a chief service officer at the bureau, said. “Tomorrow and Thursday’s highs will fall to between 32 and 33 degrees due to the peripheral influence of Tropical Storm Trami.”
But Zhu said the weekend would be influenced by a subtropical high stretching west, lifting temperatures back to around 35 degrees.
“But temperatures will be influenced by several factors, including precipitation, cloud cover, sunshine, wind direction and wind force,” Zhu said.
“We need further monitoring for the predicted coming heat.”
According to the latest reports from the weather bureau, Shanghai should feel the effects of Trami this afternoon with strong winds and showers expected.
The wind should start to weaken tomorrow night.
Shanghai’s air quality remained good yesterday, with the AQI below 50, the lowest in a six-tier scale, and ideal for outdoor activities. Monday’s average reading was 22, the lowest figure since the system was launched on December 1.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced yesterday that 49 people died and another 11 were reported missing as a result of Typhoon Utor, which brought devastation to south China last week.
