Thief, 16, caught on return to the scene

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy who stole 5,980 yuan from a vending machine on the World Expo site was jailed for six months and fined 1,000 yuan (US$149) at Pudong New Area People's Court yesterday.

On July 17, Cheng Liming, from Guizhou Province, was chatting to a maintenance worker, surnamed Fang, who was mending the machine and noticed he had failed to lock the rear cover. When Fang left he helped himself to the cash inside.

Cheng used the money to buy himself a motorcycle for 3,000 yuan and spent 1,500 yuan on modifications to it.

He used the rest for living expenses.

Cheng was caught on July 19 when he paid a return visit to the Expo site and was spotted by Fang.

During the time Cheng was held by police at a detention house, he pretended to be a mental patient and claimed he was suffering from rabies.

But prosecutors said a medical report showed Cheng was not suffering from mental illness and was fit to stand trial. The boy had come to Shanghai as a migrant worker in May.
