Thieves tempt fate as temple ripped off
A YOUNG couple has stolen 1,580 yuan (US$232) from a temple in Putuo District, police said yesterday.
Officers said it was a rare case as most believe stealing from a temple would bring bad luck. The stolen money had been donated to the temple.
The two allegedly stole the money on Monday by using a magnet or bamboo forks to take money from donation boxes, officers said.
The male suspect, surnamed Xiao, 20, stole the money while a woman surnamed Chen, 32, kept watch, police said. They were caught in the act by temple workers, police said.
Officers said Chen has been convicted of stealing money from temples before. She was released from an education labor camp in May, police said.
The suspects, both unemployed and from Anhui Province, will be detained for 15 days, police said.
