Today’s the day for thousands of couples

MARRIAGE registration centers will open longer today to cope with the expected spike in demand from people looking to tie the knot on Valentine’s Day.

The Hongkou District Marriage Registration Center will open at 8am, 30 minutes earlier than usual, and staff will also work through their lunch breaks.

Other centers have promised to stay open until all marriages have been registered, including those involving couples who didn’t make a reservation.

Valentine’s Day is popular with certain people. Last year, 4,900 couples tied the knot on February 14, more than 10 times the number on an average day, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said.

The busiest day for marriages in recent history was October 10, 2010, when 10,150 couples tied the knot in Shanghai.

In Chinese, the 10-10-10 combination represents perfection in everything.
