Top official in the dock for graft
A FORMER official of science and technology commission in Qingpu District was sentenced to 10 years in jail for corruption, the district’s People’s Procuratorate announced yesterday.
The official, Wang Xuezhong, took 150,000-yuan (US$24,165) bribe from an investor in return for a 1.35-million-yuan fund from the commission.
About 60,000 yuan of the bribe money was given to a Wang’s subordinate, prosecutors said. The subordinate, Han Huijun, was sentenced to 12 years in jail for bribery and embezzlement because he also embezzled 3 million yuan.
Zheng Liming, who paid the bribe, was sentenced to seven years in jail and was told to return the fund money back to the commission.
Prosecutors said Wang promised Zheng, who planned to set up a company in Qingpu District in 2011, a 1.35-million-yuan science fund every year if the company’s sales reached 100 million yuan in a year or 500 million yuan over three years.
