Tourist attractions happy to see increase in visitors
BETTER weather saw many of Shanghai’s scenic spots packed with tourists yesterday.
Outdoor attractions in the city reported an average 10 percent increase in visitor numbers compared to the same day last year, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said.
Security measures had been enhanced at some attractions to avoid accidents. Yuyuan Garden was crowded at noon and visitors were only allowed to walk along the zigzag Jiuqu Bridge in one direction.
At the Bund, scene of tragedy on December 31 last year when 36 people died and dozens were injured in a crush, there were 4,000 police officers on duty to maintain order, and some staircases near the viewing platform were only open for one-way traffic.
Long queues formed outside the Shanghai Museum yesterday morning with some visitors saying they had to wait for over an hour to get in, while the Shanghai Wild Animal Park had 56,000 visitors, up 10.9 percent from last year.
The Happy Valley amusement park saw 31,200 visitors, a rise of 8 percent.
The Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center said it transported more than 3,200 tourists to nearby water towns and scenic spots in neighboring Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces, 1.5 times the number the day before.
However, some indoor scenic spots including the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and China Art Museum said numbers were down.
Most tourist attractions in the city saw a sharp decline in visitors on Thursday because of the cold and wet weather.
The road administration said the city’s expressways and highways had fewer cars yesterday, but there was still traffic congestion to Chongming Island.
The city’s three railway terminals delivered a total of 433,000 visitors yesterday, compared to 483,000 on Thursday.
